Les
Sayer was a remarkable man, and a brilliant CW operator. His time as a Telegraphist Air Gunner (TAG) in WWII is legendary
and well described elsewhere. We were fortunate to count him as a
member of HARIG in the last years of his life when he began to enjoy immensely
once again the use of morse code, this time on the amateur bands, having
attained an amateur radio licence M3HDT.

In
memory of Les, his widow Valerie Sayer has had his Morse Key mounted as a
trophy to the club, to be awarded annually to one of the current members. This was named the HARIG TAG Trophy and
was presented for the first time at the 2011 AGM in December. In 2012, it will be awarded to the
member who scores highest in the 2012 HARIG Challenge.
